Heater Core Repair
You’ve run the engine long enough and the temperature gauge shows normal, but the heater just doesn’t perform like it should. You’ve had it flushed and you’ve had a high temp thermostat installed – still not enough heat.
Cause: A clogged and restricted heater core. The original heater core design in these vehicles is very small and undersized. Add as little as 70,000 miles and the small tubes inside the heater core become clogged. The result is lukewarm heater operation and summer is still a long time away.
Cure: Flushing with a chemical strong enough to clean the deposits out will also eat through the copper core itself – causing another problem – heater core leakage. If you want lots of heat, the real solution is to replace the heater core with a “Canadian” style direct replacement heater core. It’s larger volume (twice as much!) and free flow design promote faster warm up times and higher outlet temperatures. Even though heater core replacement is a labor intensive repair, the “Canadian” style heater core is a direct replacement and requires no modifications. Of course, a clean and properly operating cooling system with a Mopar* thermostat is essential for any heater to operate properly.
